"Syoku-meidai Wakasyu" collected and edited by Yanagisawa Yoshisato : ー Explanation and Reprint（5）ー

"Syoku-meidai Wakasyu" is one of the collection of about 7000 waka poems arranged by topic and theme. In 1718, it was edited by Yanagisawa Yoshisato(1687~1745), who was then daimyou(a feudal lord) at the province of Kai(present-day Yamanashi Prefecture). I had already reported in "Society for the Studies of Cross-cultural Communication and Business" under the same title(1)(2)(3)(4)(Vol.8 No.2, April 2004/ Vol.9 No.1, November 2004/ Vol.9 No.2, March 2005/ Vol.10 No.1, November 2005). This time I would like to report 1321 waka poems collected in 'Zou no Bu' or 'miscellaneous subjects', this is the final part of "Syoku-meidai Wakasyu". By the way, in 1676 Tsunayoshi's powerful chamberlain(sobayounin) Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu(1658~1714) was married to Soshi Sadako(1660~1713), his wife proved unable to provide him with an heir. He took a concubine, Iizuka Someko(1667~1705), who gave birth to a son in 1687. This child, later known as Yoshisato, was trained from an early age in the literary arts, especially waka poems. He was a prolific poet, composing more than 20,000 poems during his lifetime, and he showed himself an especially ardent admirer of Sanjyounishi Sanetaka(the descendants of the great Muromachi period court literatus and scholar of "The Tale of Genji", 1455~1537). Twice in his life, Sanetaka had composed sets of Genji kanmeika, poems on the chapters of Genji. The first set, composed in 1487, is no longer extant; the second, entitled Ei Genji monogatari makimaki waka, he dedicated to Ishiymama Temple at the beginning of the tenth month of 1533. In emulation of Sanetaka, Yoshisato too composed two sets of poems on the chapters of Genji, one in 1708, the other in 1728, both of which he dedicated to Ishiyama Temple. Yoshisato left a further four collections of his own poetry ─Sekigyokusyu(Accumulated Jewels, c.1717)─, Sekigyokusyu ingai(More Accumulated Jewels, c.1719), Jungyokusyu(Collection of Glistening Jewels, c.1725) and Shoku Jungyokusyu (Collection of Glistening Jewels continued, c.1725), all of them named, it would seem, after Sanetaka's Setsugyokusyu.
